Foundation
for Teaching Economics
The Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE) is a nonprofit organization that provides the
Economics for Leaders (EFL) programs are week-long summer workshops held at major
universities. Each course combines leadership training with an economic way of thinking
about national and international issues. Thirty high school teachers learn new interactive
lesson approaches and are provided with the opportunity to network with other teachers.
They are joined by thirty high school students, entering their senior year who are
selected for their leadership potential, and who benefit from learning leadership skills
and about basic economic principles. Except for travel to and from the program site, there
is no cost for participants to attend EFL.
Marine Navigation and Training Association (MANATRA)
The Marine Navigation and Training Association (MANATRA) is a Chicago based organization
made up of volunteers from different backgrounds and various skills who share two common
interests. These are PRIDE in America's Maritime Heritage, and the IMPORTANCE of teaching
today's youth leadership and teamwork skills utilizing a shipboard environment which
provides an understanding of the basic skills of seamanship, navigation and engineering.
Many of the young people we have worked with have gone on to wonderful careers in the
United States Navy and Merchant Marine. The Association's flagship, YP-671, is a yard
patrol vessel of the U.S. Navy and is docked near Monroe Harbor in Chicago. It is used for
the purpose of training Naval Sea Cadets, Sea Scouts and other youth organizations. We
operate in cooperation with the Navy League of the United States, a civilian patriotic
organization in support of the Navy, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. We also provide
joint Naval Sea Cadet / United States Coast Guard training as well as an orientation to
the United States Merchant Marine.
Noble Odyssey Foundation
The NOF was conceived as a way to insure the future of a very successful volunteer program which, for over 30 years, has brought maritime skills, knowledge and experience to young men and women of the Naval Sea Cadet Program, Great Lakes Division. Along the way our program has also made important contributions to exploration, research and education related to the natural history of the Great Lakes. Since 1977 our Sea Cadets have cruised some 75,000 miles of our inland seas in former U. S. Naval vessels. However, the Sea Cadet Corps has only nominal sponsorship from the Navy League and receives no funding from the U. S. Government. Rather, the Corps is a non-profit, volunteer-supported program which encourages the development of youth into good citizens through experience with Navy-style training, discipline and activities in a seagoing environment. Unlike most other Sea Cadet groups, ours has always operated its own vessels. The first was our namesake, the 80-foot "yard vessel", Noble Odyssey. Currently we navigate a similar ship, the Pride of Michigan. Both vessels have always been operated and maintained largely by Sea Cadets of middle to high school age, under the supervision of experienced volunteer staff.
President's Challenge Physical Fitness Program
The creation of the PCPFS brought concern for Americans' health and fitness to the highest
level of government. Through its Executive Order, the PCPFS is charged with promoting the
benefits of sports, fitness, and physical activity and motivating all Americans to become
and stay active and fit. From its beginning, The President's Challenge has had a special
focus on the nation's youth, encouraging them to lay the foundation for an active, healthy
adult life. While scientific knowledge about the health benefits of physical activity has
increased over the years, the PCPFS has long recognized the personal benefits of sports
participation and an active lifestyle - character development, discipline, improved
confidence, self-esteem, and well-being. The President's Council serves as a catalyst,
generating ideas and administering programs, frequently in participation with other
organizations, that reach people in schools, homes, workplaces, and communities. The PCPFS
is committed to breaking any perceived barriers - be they disabilities, race, gender, age,
lack of knowledge or opportunity - that impede any individual's access to and enjoyment of
fitness and sports activities.
Young Eagles
Sponsored by the Experimental aircraft Association (EAA), the Young Eagles program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people, ages 8 - 17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers.
Since 1992, more than 1.1 million Young Eagles have enjoyed a flight through the program. Young Eagles have been registered in more than 90 different countries and have been flown by nearly 40,000 volunteer pilots.
Participation is easy. Simply contact the EAA Young Eagles Office to find the closest volunteer pilot. From there, arrange a convenient time to go flying. We hope you enjoy a Young Eagles introduction to the exciting world of aviation. Make sure you come back to visit this web site after your flight to continue exploring the wonderful world of aviation! |
