1.  Purpose.  To announce NSCC 2008 college scholarship opportunities and advise all commands of the Scholarship Application Forms.

 

2.  Background.  Reference (a) contains basic information on the annual college scholarships offered by the Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Criteria for submission are outlined in NSCC Regulations and the scholarship application form, both of which shall be adhered to for those submitting applications.

 

3.  Discussion.  The NSCC Board of Directors has approved another series of college scholarship opportunities for Sea Cadets during 2008. All cadets shall use NSCC Scholarship Application Form NSCADM 014 (on the resources.seacadets.org web site-NSCC/NLCC Forms) when applying for NSCC scholarships. If an individual has applied for a NLUS scholarship, the NSCC College Scholarship Selection Board will accept a copy of the applicant’s NLUS application, but this copy must be sent in by the applicant to NHQ. NSCC applications are due by 15 May 2008 at NHQ. The selection board for the scholarships will meet in early June. The scholarships approved are as follows:

 

- Four (4) Helen & Morgan Fitch Scholarship of $ 5,000 each as follows:

-         Three (3) from last year’s recipients will have a renewal of their scholarships of $5,000) if they have met academic standards required for renewal.

-         One (1) New Scholarship.

 

- One (1) Stockholm Scholar for $2,500. This is for a new four year scholarship

 

- Three (3) Harry Lee & Rose Howell Scholarship as follows;

 

-         Two (2) Howell Scholarships of $2,500 each.

-         One (1) Howell scholarship of $2,000.

- Two (2) NSCC General Scholarship as follows:

           

-         One (1) funded by the NSCC General Scholarship Fund for $2,000

-         One (1) funded by LCDR Gary Young, NSCC for $1,500

 

- One (1) USS John A. Bole (DD-755) Wardroom JO’s (1961-1965) Scholarship for $2,000

 

- One (1) NSCC Board of Directors Scholarship provided by Mr. Nicholas Ricco in the name of his wife, Anna, for $1,500.

 

- One (1) San Diego and Gas & Electric Scholarship for $1,000.

 

Note: This scholarship has gone unfilled for several years. Minority applicants from San Diego area are encouraged to apply.  

Additional Scholarships (5-27-08)

-One (1) LCDR Henry E. Mooberry Scholarship for $2,500 (renewable for four years)
            Note: This scholarship is funded by the Capital Council, Navy League of U.S.
The scholarship is for cadets in NSCC units supported by Capitol Council.

-One Captain Nicholas Brango Scholarship for $1,000.
            Note: This scholarship is funded by Captain N. Brango family in his honor.

The NLUS Scholarship Program is administered by the Navy League. Information on requirements for these scholarships are found on the NLUS web site. All personnel are encouraged to apply for the NSCC scholarships. 

Commanding Officers are requested to give this information letter widest possible distribution and encourage interested and eligible cadets to apply.

4.  Cancellation.  This information letter is cancelled 1 July 2008.
