2003 NAVY LEAGUE OF US (NLUS) SCHOLARSHIPS

1.  Purpose.  To announce NSCC 2003 college scholarship opportunities and advise all commands of the Scholarship Application Form. 

2.  Background.  Reference (a) contains information on the annual college scholarships offered by the Naval Sea Cadet Corps.  Criteria for submission are outlined in NSCC Regulations and shall be adhered to for those submitting applications

3Discussion. The NSCC Board of Directors has approved another series of college scholarship opportunities for Sea Cadets during 2003.  Last year there were a limited number of applications for the scholarships and the chances of getting a scholarship were excellent.  All cadets shall use the enclosed NSCC Scholarship Application Form (NSC-14, revised 1/98) when applying for NSCC scholarships.  Applications are due by 15 May 2003 at NHQ.  The scholarships approved are as follows:

  • Four (4) NSCC Scholarships of $1,000 each to be given in name of

RADM Hamlin B. Tallent --- $1,000
RADM Richard K. Gallagher --- $1,000
Family KIA of St Augustine --- $1,000 (Jacksonville/Florida area)
LCDR Gary Young --- $1,000 (Atlanta, GA area)

  • One (1) NSCC Board of Directors Scholarship provided b y Mr. Nicholas Ricco in memory of Mr. Allen Groh for $1,300.    
     
  • Five (5) Kingsley Foundation Scholarships of $1,000 each (subject to receipt of grant).
  • One (1) Robert & Helen Scharf Hutton Scholarship of $1,000.
     
  • One (1) Sierra Military Health Organization Scholarship of $2,000 (order of priority considerations Baltimore, Annapolis, Washington DC, Mid-Atlantic, and New England areas.
     
  • One (1) Harry Lee & Rose Howell Scholarship of $2,000.

NLUS Scholarships
In addition to the NSCC scholarships, the Navy League (NLUS) has approximately ten (10) scholarships available to grant.  The amounts to be awarded will be for $2,000 - $2,500 per year.  Some will be for four years and some for one year.  Information on these scholarships can be found on the NLUS web site (navyleague.org) or call Sheila Hallas at NLUS Hdqtrs at 703-528-1775, 703-312-1556.  There is a separate application form for the Navy League scholarships.  The application form can be downloaded from the web site.  Deadline for NLUS scholarships is 28 March 2003.

Cadets may apply for both NSCC and NLCC scholarships.

Commanding Officers are requested to give this information letter widest possible distribution and encourage interested and eligible cadets to apply.

4.  Cancellation. This information letter is cancelled 1 June 2003.
