NSCC INFORMATION LETTER 4-98

From: Executive Director, Naval Sea Cadet Corps
Subj: TWT OPPORTUNITY WITH THE FOUNDATION FOR TEACHING ECONOMICS

1. Purpose. To announce the 1998 program in which NSCC high school juniors can compete for a special one-week Economics for Leaders program at leading colleges and universities.

2. Background: The Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE), a non-profit education organization, is again making a special one-week program available for NSCC students who are presently in their junior year of high school. In 1997 ten billets were provided to NSCC. This program, Economics for Leaders, has been designed to equip potential leaders with an in-depth understanding of the economic aspects of national and international issues. The course includes leadership simulations and exercises that demonstrate the fundamentals of taking charge in diverse situations. The 1998 courses will be held at various colleges and universities in Madison, WI (14-21 June); Dallas, TX (14-21 June); Williamsburg, VA (21-28 June) and(12-19 July); Boulder, CO (28 June-5 July); Atlanta, GA (5-12 July); Santa Barbara, CA (5-12 July); Wooster, OH (12-19 July); Seattle,WA (19-26 July); Santa Fe, NM(19-26 July); Boston, MA (19-26 July) and (2-9 August); Evanston, IL (26 July-2 August) and Davis, CA (2-9 August). More information may be obtained on the WEB at www.fte.com

3. Discussion: The Naval Sea Cadet Corps seeks opportunities for cadet leadership development, growth and training. The course offered by FTE offers a unique opportunity for mature cadets, who are juniors in high school, to take advantage of an inexpensive program that counts toward TWT requirements. Only one cadet per unit may apply for selection. If there is more than one unit in the local area, the proposed cadets must not know one another. All expenses, including lodging, meals and course materials will be paid by FTE for students selected to attend. However, those selected will be required to provide a $100 deposit to assure their participation. The deposit will be refunded, upon completion of the course. Expenses not covered are transportation to and from the program site and incidental spending money. Commanding officers of NSCC units shall give this Information Letter widest distribution, especially to cadets who are currently high school juniors. NSCC cadets who are interested in the learning objectives outlined for the course and desire to compete for billets must be recommended by their commanding officers. Cadets must complete a student Foundation for Teaching Economics application that may be obtained by contacting NSCC Headquarters. Completed applications must be submitted to FTE no later than 6 April 1998. Those selected for the program will be notified by late April and provided with program materials that must be completed and returned directly to FTE with the $100 reservation deposit by 15 May 1998.

4. Cancellation: This Information Letter is canceled when contents have been noted and disseminated to interested and qualified cadets, but no later than 1 September 1998.
