NSCC INFORMATION LETTER 8-97
1. Purpose. To provide information on the Navy's Ship Naming Contest and solicit NSCC cadets participation in the contest. 2. Background. The Secretary of the Navy recently announced a nationwide contest for school children to name the Navy's newest oceanographic survey ship now under construction and scheduled for launch in 1998. Reference (a) previously provided some general information on the contest, including enclosure (1), which is reissued here. The contest will be supported by the Navy League, Navy Memorial, the National Geographic Society, and the Department of Education 3. Discussion. The Name the Ship Contest will be under the guidance of your local schools. The contest will run from September through December 1997. There will be two divisions for contest purposes; K through sixth grade, and seventh through twelfth grade. Students will be encouraged to work in teams to come up with the proposed names. Proposed names will be forwarded to Navy League state officials for selection of divisional winners. Division winners will be forwarded to Washington,. D.C. by 15 March 1998 for selection of final national winner to be announce in May 1998. Enclosure (2) provides detail information on the following areas of the contest; eligibility of students, general rules on formation of the teams, name criteria and background information, entry procedures and key points of contacts within the Navy. Included therein are several key Web site listings which will significantly help the contestants in their efforts to get background information and do research on proposed names. Navy League points of contact are also identified in enclosure (2). Commanding officers are requested to discuss this contest with their cadets. The poster should be displayed in a prominent place so the cadets can review the rule and procedures to assist them in their efforts to select a name. 4. Cancellation: Wide dissemination of this information letter is requested. This letter is canceled for record purpose on 30 June 1998.
