NSCC INFORMATION LETTER 9-91

From: Executive Director, U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps
To: Distribution

Subj: Air Rifle Marksmanship Training

Ref: (a) NSCC/NLCC Awards Manual
(b) NSCC/NLCC Advancement and Training Manual

Encl: (1) American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program Brochure
(2) Initial Equipment List and Address of Suppliers

1. Approved small bore (22/38/45 cal) ranges, the weapons and ammunition have become more difficult to schedule because of enforcement of EPA/OSHA standards, and increasing costs. Alternative training programs are needed that do not require approved ranges, are less expensive in the long term and provide a safe method of instruction. The American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program provides that alternative. The program, presently used by NJROTC and other youth programs for their National competition events, provides the basics for both training and competition. The air rifle may also be used to qualify cadets for NSCC/NLCC Marksmanship Ribbons, using the rifle scoring requirements of reference (a), page 11. The initial requirement is American Legion Post endorsement of the affliation letter included in enclosure (1).

2. NSCC units, interested in participating, complete and submit endorsed Junior Shooting Sports Program Affiliation letter from enclosure (1), copy to NHQ. A recommended start up kit and addresses of companies that are suppliers of that equipment is provided in enclosure (2).

3. This information letter remains in effect until incorporated into reference (b).
