![]() 3 January 1998 NSCC ACTION LETTER 1-98
1. Purpose. To provide information and solicit membership in the NLUS by parents of NSCC cadets. 2. Backround. The NLUS was established by Congress as a non-profit organization to educate the general populace on the need for the United States to maintain a strong maritime position within the world. The need to accomplish this mission was recognized by President Theodore Roosevelt, who requested the NLUS be formed. Membership in the NLUS is open to all, and new members are solicited in a variety of ways. 3. Discussion. The NLUS is in the midst of a recruiting drive for new members. Since the Naval Sea Cadet Corps is sponsored by the NLUS, it is to the benefit of the Sea Cadet organization to assist in this recruiting drive. A stronger and larger NLUS can directly benefit the NSCC through a variety of means. First, the NSCC derives a substantial portion of its operating budget fiom NLUS contributions. Secondly, as a primary youth organization of the NLUS, a larger NLUS provides the NSCC with a greater sphere of influence when dealing with Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard commands, other DOD activities, and local community leaders. A request has been forwarded to each cadet's parents to join the local NLUS. To further assist this effort, an agreement has been made between the National NLUS President and the NSCC National Chairman to reduce the membership fee to a special introductory offer of $18.00. Previously a recruiting package was forwarded to unit commanding officers and parents soliciting parental membership in the NLUS. It contained membership forms to assist parents in joining the Navy League. Those parents who join should be brought into the local Navy League with the assistance of the NSCC Committee Chairman. A letter was forwarded previously to the NSCC Committee Chairman (unit commanding officers were provided a copy) requesting assistance in welcoming new parents into the Navy League. 4. Action. Unit commanding officers with Navy League councils in their areas are requested to: (a) Solicit membership in NLUS from parents of present and new cadets who join the unit prior to 01 July 1998. (b) Introduce parents who join the NLUS to the Navy League Committee Chairman to assist the parent in becoming an active member of the local Navy League council 5. Cancellation. This letter is canceled 01 July 1998.
