NSCC ACTION LETTER 3-97
1. Purpose: To announce a pilot program in which members of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps who are juniors in high school can participate in a special one-week Economics for Leaders program. 2. Background: The Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE), a non-profit education organization, is making available to the Naval Sea Cadet Corps a special one-week program for students who are presently in their junior year of high school. This program, Economics for Leaders, has been designed to equip potential leaders with an in-depth understanding of the economic aspects of national and international issues. As part of the course, there will be leadership simulations and exercises that demonstrate the fundamentals of taking charge in diverse situations. Enclosure (1)provides more detailed information on this one-week program. 3. Discussion: The Naval Sea Cadet Corps is always seeking new opportunities for leadership development, growth and training. The course offered by the Foundation for Teaching Economics offers a unique opportunity for mature cadets who are juniors in high school to take advantage of an inexpensive program that will count toward fulfilling TWT requirements. The program is being conducted under a cooperative pilot arrangement and if successful, will become part of the regular summer TWT schedule. As noted in Enclosure (1), for students selected to attend, all expenses including lodging, meals and course materials will be paid for by FTE. The only expenses not paid are transportation to and from the program site and incidental spending money. Additional information on this program may be obtained by contacting NHQ. 4. Action: Commanding Officers of NSCC units shall give this Action Letter widest distribution, especially to cadets who currently are high school juniors. NSCC cadets who are interested in the learning objectives outlined for the course and who desire to attend, must be recommended by their commanding officer. Cadets shall complete the Student Application provided in enclosure (2) and return the original by 30 March 1997 to the Foundation for Teaching Economics per the application. Send a copy of the application to NSCC Headquarters, Attn: FTE Application. 5. Cancellation: This Action Letter is canceled when contents have been noted and disseminated to interested and qualified cadets but no later than 1 September 1997.
