NSCC ACTION LETTER 1-97
1. Purpose. To provide information and solicit membership in the NLUS by parents of NSCC cadets, and to develop a program where NSCC officers and cadets solicit membership in the NLUS from community members. 2. Background. The NLUS was established by Congress as a non-profit organization to educate the general populace on the need for the United States to maintain a strong maritime position within the world. The need to accomplish this mission was recognized by President Theodore Roosevelt, who requested the NLUS be formed. Membership in the NLUS is open to all, and new members are solicited in a variety of ways. 3. Discussion. The NLUS is in the midst ofa recruiting drive for new members. Since the Naval Sea Cadet Corps is sponsored by the NLUS, it is to the benefit of the Sea Cadet organization to assist in this recruiting drive. A stronger and larger NLUS can directly benefit the NSCC through a variety of means. First, the NSCC derives a substantial portion of its operating budget through NLUS contributions. Secondly, as a primary youth organization of the NLUS, a larger NLUS provides the NSCC with a greater sphere of influence when dealing with Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard commands, other DOD activities, and local community leaders. Previously a request was forwarded to each cadets' parent to join the local NLUS. To augment this effort, an agreement has been made between the National NLUS President and the NSCC National Chairman, to have cadets make direct sales contact with local community members to join the NLUS. Enclosure (1) has been developed to assist unit cadets in soliciting membership in the NLUS. For every six memberships sold, one will be given free. 4. Action. Unit commanding officers with Navy League Councils in their areas are requested to organize a local unit marketing effort to solicit NLUS membership from the community leaders. Cadets shall use enclosures (1) and (2) in conducting individual or unit sales efforts. 5. Cancellation: This letter is canceled 31 December 1997.
